FOODLINK is a comprehensive database and data visualization platform designed to improve access to information on food resources and to support effective food policy in West Virginia, Appalachia, and nationally. Our research team annually updates data on West Virginia food retail (grocery, convenience, farmers markets, dollar stores), nutritional programs such as SNAP, WIC, school nutrition, TEFAP, and charitable food assistance. We have research partnerships with the Mountaineer and Facing Hunger Food Banks, WVU Extension, WV Food and Farm Coalition, WV Center for Budget and Policy. Our ground-truthed data on retail, nutrition assistance and charities in WV has enabled us to develop cutting edge food access indices, drive-time analyses and other dynamic geographic information science (GIS) based studiesto address food access disparities. FOODLINK is now available online for WV and a partnership with Community Food Initiatives in Ohio has recently expanded the methodology and Nourishing Networks food system planning work to 10 Appalachian Ohio counties.
